From Mechanical to Digital


Clinical understanding of pressure injuries has deepened in recent decades. Two biomechanical mechanisms now sit at the centre of the picture: ischemia, where sustained pressure restricts blood flow to tissue, and cell deformation, where pressure physically distorts the cells themselves.


Older equipment generations could only address one mechanism at a time. Traditional alternating pressure systems address ischemia by cycling pressure on and off, but the changes can be abrupt enough to introduce new loading on adjacent areas. Constant low pressure systems envelop the body more gently, addressing cell deformation, but they do not relieve the slow pressure build-up that drives ischemia.


CuroCell iA® was developed to bridge both. It uses Gentle Alternating Low Pressure, a quieter, more controlled cycle that aims to retain the benefits of alternating systems without their downsides. The AI then sits on top of that, individualising the response to each patient rather than running a one-size-fits-all programme.

What CuroCell iA® does


CuroCell iA® is an AI-enabled active pressure care mattress system manufactured by Care of Sweden. The intelligence lives in the control unit, which constantly monitors pressure across the patient's contact area and calculates its response.


The system identifies the patient's weight and height, then detects changes as they happen, including when the patient adopts a new position. If a new posture results in excessive pressure on any part of the body, CuroCell iA® acts on individual cells within the mattress to adjust the contact between the patient and the surface.
