What Is a Pressure Injury?

A pressure injury (also known as a pressure sore or bed sore) occurs when the skin and underlying tissue are damaged by continuous pressure or friction. This often happens over bony areas such as the heels, hips, elbows, or tailbone, where blood flow is easily reduced.

When pressure or shear is not relieved, the skin can become starved of oxygen, leading to tissue damage. Injuries can range from mild redness to open wounds that expose deeper layers of tissue.

There are two main ways this can happen:

  • Ischaemia: When pressure is constant, blood flow is restricted, starving the tissue of oxygen. Over time, this can cause deep-tissue damage that may not be visible right away.
  • Cell deformation: When pressure is sudden or uneven, such as from wrinkled bedding, medical devices, or poor positioning, cells can deform and die within minutes.

While pressure injuries can cause pain, infection, and slower recovery, the positive news is that most are preventable. Regular movement, the use of pressure-relieving surfaces, and good skin care are simple, effective steps that protect comfort and well-being.

Prevention Through Knowledge and Collaboration

Pressure injuries are among the most common healthcare-acquired conditions, yet most can be prevented through awareness and early action. Effective prevention not only saves time and resources, it also protects comfort, dignity, and overall wellbeing.

Stop Pressure Injury Day is a powerful reminder that awareness inspires action. When healthcare professionals and carers work together, they can significantly reduce the risk of injury through regular assessment, shared education, and evidence-based care.
